Larry Gus comes out of nowhere with an album that completely awes. Start with track 2, which throws you right into his African-electro-hip hop melting pot of sound. Then jump over to track 6 for a Talking Heads meets Arcade Fire jam. The songs are long, complex, and filled with lyrics that seem to reflect Gus questioning his own sanity. And of course, with what is possibly the standout feature of this album, Gus sprinkles samples of many different styles of world music that often sound Middle Eastern or African. This is definitely an unexpected “out-there” album, but the less you are prepared for it the better the surprise will be.
