Monday Mash-Up: 2/2
Purity Ring – “Begin Again”
In anticipation of their second LP, Another Eternity (out March 3rd via 4AD), Purity Ring has released their second single, “Begin Again,” and I’ve fallen in love with it. Despite listening to it on repeat for hours (five of them, I’ve counted) in the past few weeks, it sounds just as fresh as when I first heard it. “Begin Again” represents a somewhat darker shift from Shrines. Although electronic rhythms still support Megan James’s beautiful voice, the song feels spookier overall. Hopefully it’s a sign that Another Eternity is gonna be a fresh second sophomore album. – Nick Sullivan
Amason – “Älgen”
“I don’t normally like indie, but this band is pretty neat. I really dig that echoey indie sound reminds me of music my friends would play when we would go to the beach. They just dropped their debut album last week too.” – Chris Fiorentino
Tricot – “E”
This Japanese math-rock combo has lost their guitarist, but what they lack now in membership they make up for in pure musical dexterity. You’ll go crazy trying to get your head around these rapid time signature changes.
Aphex Twin – “Organ”
Electronic music fans were treated to an early Christmas recently. The once famously reclusive musical mastermind Richard D. James dumped a motherload of tracks onto Soundcloud anonymously, providing eight hours of unreleased tunes. This jaunty number is just one of the many highlights.
Cannibal Ox – “Iron Rose (feat. MF DOOM)”
Another return from an elusive entity. Cannibal Ox haven’t released an album since 2001, but their upcoming follow-up sounds as cold, raw, and powerful as ever. An extra verse from none other than DOOM himself doesn’t hurt.
