No. 23 Pitt 56, Seton Hall 46: Postgame Recap and Audio
Game Recap
By: Nate Barnes
In what could be seen as a proverbial “trap game” for the Pittsburgh Panthers Monday night against Seton Hall—a game sandwiched between an emotional win against No. 6 Syracuse Saturday and a re-match with No. 17 Cincinnati on the road this upcoming Saturday—the Panthers overcame a slow start to notch a double-digit victory over the Pirates, 56-46. Pitt didn’t get the victory in the most appealing fashion, but got it done with another solid defensive performance and a team effort with five players notching seven points or more. Lamar Patterson led the way with a double-double in putting up 12 points and 10 rebounds, while point guard Tray Woodall finished with 11 points.
No. 23 Pitt ended the first half tied at 24 apiece with Seton Hall, one of the Big East’s bottom-dwellers owning a 2-7 conference record. The teams combined for a putrid half of offense by shooting a combined 31.3 percent on an aggregate 16-51 shooting from the field. Fuquan Edwin—entering the game with a 16.6 point per game average—kept the Pirates in the contest throughout, and finished with a game-high 23 points. But Pitt kept the rest of Edwin’s teammates in check, with no other player scoring more than six points for Seton Hall.
In the second half, Pitt locked down the Pirates and pulled away via a dominant performance on the glass, out-rebounding Seton Hall 20-10 in the second frame. Steven Adams led the charge on the glass as he registered a career-high 15 rebounds alongside eight points and two blocks. Up next for the Panthers are back to back road contests against No. 17 Cincinnati and No. 24 Marquette.
