Painted Eyes – Interview
A WPTS Music special feature by Calder Buisch and Ryan Hartman
Painted Eyes is the special guest on Electric Bananarama this week! Before the show we talked to Matt, their bass player, to get a little background on the band. Make sure you tune in tonight at 6 to hear more about the band and some of their favorite music!
Who are Painted Eyes?
Matt: Kevin (drums), Justin (guitar/vox), Matt (bass/vox)
How long have you been making music in Painted Eyes? How’d it come about?
Matt: We’ve been playing about a year and a half. Kevin and I have played in different bands together for about 10 years or so, and Justin had just moved to Pittsburgh, he had some songs, and he wanted to get a band going.
How long have you guys been a part of the Pittsburgh Punk Scene? Have you seen significant change in that time?
Matt: I’ve been going to shows since the early 90s. Its changed a lot since those very early days. There are more venues, more bands and more cliques now. I’ve also been recording bands since about 2007-ish.
What are some artists, local or otherwise, that have inspired you and informed your music?
Matt: Tough question. I was big time into the whole 90s garage rock thing (New Bomb Turks, The Mummies, etc…), so that definitely affected the development of my musical taste. I’m a big Greg Cartwright fan as well (The Oblivians, The Reigning Sound, Compulsive Gamblers). These days I might be into anything from Blonde Redhead to Dead Moon to The Growlers.
You guys just released a cassette right? How long had you been working on that material? Do you have any idea of what’s next?
Matt: We spent about a year working on the stuff that’s on the tape. Right now we are trying to write some more stuff and hopefully play some shows this summer
