The Left Foot October 24
By Zachary Herbster, The Left Foot Co-Host
On this weeks edition of The Left Foot, co-hosts Vincent Smith and Zachary Herbster discuss the current state of Pennsylvania’s voter ID laws.
Governor Tom Corbett and the Republican camp are pushing a million dollar advertising package that would display on television how to sign up to obtain an ID card from the state of Pennsylvania.
However, because this law has been put on hold by the State Courts, voters are not required to have an ID for any upcoming elections. Some state Democrats, such as State Senator Matt Smith from Allegheny County, think that the state should hold off on enforcing this law until an ultimate decision is reached.
“Simply put, taxpayer funds should not be used to promote this law until there is a clear and final decision by Commonwealth Court on its constitutionality,” said Smith.
Vince and Zach discuss the possible implications that voter ID laws could have on poll turnouts from minorities, the elderly and the uninformed. They also discuss the definition of “voter fraud” and the arguments coming from the Republican advertising campaign.
Will this turn certain demographics away from voting? Is a million dollar ad for a law that is not in effect warranted? All these questions and more are answered on this episode of The Left Foot.
