Donnie Trumpet and the Social Experiment
Surf
Self-Released
First off, let’s get one thing straight: no, this is NOT a Chance the Rapper album.
He might be rapping on it, but so are tons of other artists: the features list is truly mind boggling. It’s really the work of Donnie Trumpet and the Social Experiment, a Chicago ensemble headed by trumpet Nico Segal. This means that you’re going to be hearing some sounds quite different from your standard mixtape. This is a jazz, soul, r&b, and pop record just as much as it is a hip-hop one. It’s hard no to resist the groovy charms and expansive vision of Surf, a truly collaborative effort that showcases some of the most talented musicians working today. – Stephen Wuchina
