WPTS Presents: Juliana Barwick
Ambient music is too often described as “disconnected” and “spacey”. It’s understandable; the longest standing ambient traditions are rooted in the late 60’s German Experimental movement known as “Kosmische Musik”, or “cosmic music”. But half a century later, the majority of ambient musicians still have their head in the clouds, or in the ether, or in the planes departing from Brian Eno’s airport. Julianna Barwick, on the other hand, is here on planet Earth among moss and slate and trees. On record, creaking upright pianos and quaint string quartets color her choral compositions, but live, all we can hear are the towering, pristine vocal loops she generates on stage with just a few reverb pedals and a microphone. It’s human, it’s massive, and it’s drop-dead gorgeous.
Juliana Barwick is playing the Warhol Sound Series on Saturday February 8th, at 8pm.
